The story
Grace finds him at the end of the road
He drives with whiskey on the dashboard and a Bible on the shelf, running empty and running from himself. On a gravel road by a steeple, a white-haired woman lets him into the back pew, and something in his chest breaks open; now a worn cross at his neck only reminds him what happened when he hit his knees.
Lyrics
Verse 1
I was runnin' on empty, runnin' from myself Whiskey on my dashboard, Bible on the shelf Hadn't talked to Mama in about a month or two And the man in the mirror didn't look like someone I once knew
Pre-Chorus
I pulled off on a gravel road, broke down and cried Looked up at the steeple, and I swallowed all my pride
Chorus
Jesus saves, even the ones who don't deserve it Jesus saves, when we're too far gone to surface When the bottom falls out and you're face down in the hurt Jesus saves the broken ones first Jesus saves
Verse 2
A little white-haired woman let me sit in the back pew She didn't ask no questions, she just said He loves you too I ain't been perfect since, Lord knows I've slipped a time or ten But somethin' shifted in my chest that I ain't felt since I was ten
Chorus
Jesus saves, even the ones who don't deserve it Jesus saves, when we're too far gone to surface When the bottom falls out and you're face down in the hurt Jesus saves the broken ones first Jesus saves
Verse 3
Now I keep a cross around my neck, my grandma's worn-out one It don't make me better, it just reminds me what He's done And when the darkness comes again, and I know it always will I close my eyes and feel the light come pourin' down the hill
Bridge
I ain't preachin' from a pulpit, I ain't perfect, I ain't clean But grace don't need a résumé It just needs you on your knees So if you're sittin' in the dark tonight Wonderin' if you're worth the fight Jesus saves, He saves, He saves
