The story
A shirt becomes the last place love still fits.
He leaves behind a grey T-shirt, and she keeps it on the bedroom floor, then on her own body, where the holes, the cologne, and the campfire smoke make him feel near. Her friends say let it go, but with every wash the scent fades, and what scares her most is not losing him—it’s when the shirt is only a shirt.
Lyrics
Verse 1
You left your t-shirt on my bedroom floor The grey one with the holes you always wore It still smells like your cologne and campfire smoke I put it on last night and almost broke It hangs down past my knees, too big for me But somehow it's the only thing I need Wrapped up in the ghost of what we had Your t-shirt's all that's keeping me from sad
Pre-Chorus
It's just cotton and some thread But it holds everything you said
Chorus
Your t-shirt's all I've got A faded memory that I can't wash out I wear it when the missing gets too loud And pretend your arms are still around Your t-shirt, it's not much But it's the closest thing I have to your touch And I know I should let go But I'm not ready to give up your ghost So I'll sleep in your t-shirt
Verse 2
My friends say throw it out and move along But they don't know our three AM slow songs They don't know how you'd wrap me up so tight In this same shirt on every Sunday night I've washed it seventeen times now And the scent is fading out Pretty soon it's just a shirt And that's what scares me the most, no doubt
Verse 3
One day I'll fold it up and put it away In a box of things from yesterday I'll find a love that fits me like it should Instead of one that's three sizes too big but felt so good But not tonight, tonight I need the threads Of something that remembers where your heart once led So judge me if you want, I don't care I'll be here in your t-shirt with my messy hair
Bridge
It's funny how a piece of cloth Can hold a world of us Every stain, every tear Is a moment made of trust And maybe holding on Is just my way of saying goodbye One thread at a time One wash at a time
The sound
Intimate, bedroom-pop-meets-country at 80 BPM. Soft fingerpicked acoustic guitar, lo-fi drum machine subtly underneath. Warm reverb on everything. Gentle synth pad creating atmosphere. Very minimal, very personal. Build slightly on the chorus with added bass and light electric guitar. Think 2 AM confessional, vulnerability turned into sound.
