If I Didn't Love You

The story

Love makes even leaving feel impossible.

They lie awake counting phone checks, meals, and songs that keep pulling one name back into the room. He can’t do the clean goodbye, can’t drive past the apartment without looking for the light, and writes her into the night; even so, he chooses the ache over pretending it was never real.

Lyrics

Verse 1

If I didn't love you I'd be sleepin' through the night I wouldn't check my phone a hundred times beneath the light I'd eat a meal without you crossin' through my mind I'd listen to our song and feel absolutely fine

Pre-Chorus

But I do, and that's the problem, ain't it clear Every painless thing turns painful when you're not here

Chorus

If I didn't love you, this would all be easy I'd just walk away and nobody would see me break If I didn't love you, I could breathe without it hurtin' But I love you and that's why these tears keep workin' Overtime on a heart that don't get paid If I didn't love you, I'd have it made

Verse 2

If I didn't love you I could look you in the eye And say goodbye like normal people do and I'd survive I wouldn't drive past your apartment just to see your light Wouldn't sit here writin' lyrics about you every night

Chorus

If I didn't love you, this would all be easy I'd just walk away and nobody would see me break If I didn't love you, I could breathe without it hurtin' But I love you and that's why these tears keep workin' Overtime on a heart that don't get paid If I didn't love you, I'd have it made

Verse 3

But I wouldn't trade a single ache for not knowin' how you felt Wouldn't trade the way you held me like the only hand I'd been dealt 'Cause even in the hurtin' there's a beauty that remains If I didn't love you, I'd miss the sun behind the rain

Bridge

So I'll love you through the leavin' and the losin' and the ache I'll love you 'til the feelin' finally starts to fade And if it never does, well then at least I'll always know I loved somebody real enough to let 'em go

The sound

Emotional duet-style country ballad at 76 BPM. Piano leading with delicate chords. Acoustic guitar supporting gently. Strings building slowly through the arrangement. Minimal drums - just a gentle kick pulse. Pedal steel adding ache between lines. Vocal space wide open for emotion. Crescendo on the final chorus with full instrumentation. Devastating, beautiful, tear-jerking.
