The story

When the chorus becomes a plea, the bottle stops being a joke.

He starts in a town where jukebox joints turn whiskey into a punchline, but the morning after keeps getting louder than the band. What begins as a cold one after work turns into survival, then into a warning for the kid in the pickup, and finally into a glass of anything else, raised to the song that helps him put the bottle down.

Lyrics

Verse 1

Used to drink because I liked the taste Cold one cracked after a long day's work Somewhere between the fun and the habit The medicine started doing the hurt Now every jukebox joint in this town Is singing songs about the bottle like it's fine Like whiskey's just a punchline Not a prison doing time

Pre-Chorus

We glorify the poison and the party But nobody sings about the morning after

Chorus

Drinking songs sound different when you mean it When the whiskey isn't fun it's survival Drinking songs hit different at the bottom When you're not singing along you're writing your own And the melody is shaking hands at sunrise And the chorus is please God not again Drinking songs are only fun Until the drinking ain't pretend

Verse 2

I love this genre but it scares me sometimes How we wrap a warning in a hook Some kid's gonna hear this in his pickup And think the answer's at the bottom where I looked I'm not saying ban the party anthems Hell I wrote a few myself back when But there's a difference between a Friday feeling And a Tuesday morning shaking trying to begin

Verse 3

So here's a drinking song for the ones who stopped For the ones who pour it out instead of down For the ones who sit in bars with water Just to prove they still can be around This one's for the sober and the trying For the relapse and the getting back on track May your drinking song be one you sing past tense And may you never have to go back

Bridge

Raise a glass of anything that isn't The thing that almost took you out Here's to the drinking song that saved you The one that made you put the bottle down

The sound

Raw stripped-down country at 90 BPM. Acoustic guitar and voice dominant. Subtle bass, minimal drums entering on chorus. Dobro or resonator guitar adding texture. Honest, raw, almost demo-quality production. Tyler Childers meets Jason Isbell. Unflinching, brave, important.
