The story
The porch is emptier than anyone can bear.
A call comes on a Wednesday, and he drives four hours in the dark, crying between every mile. On the porch, his grandpa’s chair, coffee cup, and old flannel still wait, while grandma sets a place anyway and peppermints turn up like small acts of love. He wants one more slow summer afternoon, one more lesson, before the world takes the man who built it.
Lyrics
Verse 1
I got the call on a Wednesday, mama's voice was barely there She said baby he's gone peaceful, but the words cut through the air I drove four hours in the dark, didn't stop except to cry Pulled into the driveway wishin' grandpas never died
Pre-Chorus
He taught me how to bait a hook, how to shake a hand How to love a woman and be a decent man
Chorus
I wish grandpas never died, I wish time would slow its roll I wish front-porch conversations didn't have to take their toll I wish the man who built my world could stay here for a while I wish grandpas never died, I wish heaven wasn't so far of a mile
Verse 2
His chair's still on the porch, his coffee cup's still on the shelf Grandma sets a place for him like she's foolin' everybody else The garden's gettin' weedy, no one tends it like he did And I keep findin' peppermints he'd hidden for the kids
Chorus
I wish grandpas never died, I wish time would slow its roll I wish front-porch conversations didn't have to take their toll I wish the man who built my world could stay here for a while I wish grandpas never died, I wish heaven wasn't so far of a mile
Verse 3
I'm wearin' his old flannel and it hangs down past my hands But I'll grow into the man he was, that's my only plan Someday I'll be a grandpa sittin' on that same old porch Tellin' his stories to a little one who carries on the torch
Bridge
I know he's up there fishin' on a golden lake somewhere Savin' me a seat beside him in his rocking chair But tonight I'd trade the stars and every prayer I ever prayed For one more afternoon with him on a slow summer day I wish grandpas never died
The sound
Deeply emotional country ballad, 72 BPM, gentle acoustic guitar, soft piano carrying the melody, barely-there percussion, bass providing a warm foundation, pedal steel crying throughout, strings building on the final chorus, male vocal breaking with genuine grief and love, production that is sparse and reverent, tissues-required level of emotion
