That's What I've Been Told

Morgan Town · 3:03 · 4/3/2026 · 78 plays

The story

He survives on borrowed faith and a stubborn cup of coffee.

He wakes to the advice everyone hands him: time heals, love comes later, pain has purpose, failure leads somewhere. By night, with the coffee gone cold, he stands in the same lonely place, trying to believe the stories his grandma and daddy pass down. He keeps moving anyway, but the question hangs there: what if he never gets to be the one who knows?

Lyrics

Verse 1

They say time heals everything, just give it a year They say the right one's comin', she's probably already here They say God's got a plan and it's better than your own That's what I've been told but I'm still standin' here alone

Pre-Chorus

I believe it in the mornin' when the coffee's fresh and warm But by midnight I'm back questionin' who I'm doin' this for

Chorus

That's what I've been told, that it all works out That the pain's got purpose even when you're full of doubt That the best is yet to come if you just let it unfold That's what I've been told, that's what I've been told

Verse 2

My grandma swore that heartbreak was just love doin' its job Teachin' you to hold on tighter when you find a love that's not My daddy said that failure's just the first step to the top But he never told me what to do when the steppin' doesn't stop

Chorus

That's what I've been told, that it all works out That the pain's got purpose even when you're full of doubt That the best is yet to come if you just let it unfold That's what I've been told, that's what I've been told

Verse 3

So I'll keep on believin' even when belief runs thin 'Cause what's the alternative, to never try again Maybe all the people who've been tellin' me this stuff Are just people who survived it sayin' trust me, it's enough

Bridge

And maybe someday I'll be the one who says Hey kid, I know it hurts, but you ain't done yet The light at the end ain't just a story that's been sold I'll say I know 'cause that's what I was told That's what I've been told

The sound

Reflective acoustic country, 94 BPM, fingerpicked acoustic guitar as the foundation, light piano accents, gentle bass, brushed drums building slowly, pedal steel adding melancholy beauty, subtle strings on the bridge, honest and searching male vocal, minimal production that lets the lyrics and voice carry the emotion
