The story

Speed fades; the people beside him stay.

He starts on his daddy’s shoulders at the racetrack, all burnt rubber and engine roar, learning the thrill of the numbers as the cars blur past. Years later he chases speed through love and work, but his father’s warning slows him, and now he lifts his own little girl high as the flags wave and the circle starts again.

Lyrics

Verse 1

Daddy took me to the races when I was barely four The smell of burnt rubber and the engines' mighty roar I didn't understand the rules, just pointed at the fast He put me on his shoulders and I held on while they passed

Pre-Chorus

That's where I learned that life's a race you don't run all alone Somebody's always in your corner, callin' you back home

Chorus

Numbers on the cars goin' round and round Just like the years that spin without a sound I'm still that kid on daddy's shoulders reachin' for the stars Chasin' dreams as fast as numbers on the cars

Verse 2

I grew up wantin' speed, in love, in life, in everything Burned through relationships and jobs like gasoline But daddy always said slow down, the finish line ain't goin' nowhere The ones who win the race are the ones who know when to take care

Chorus

Numbers on the cars goin' round and round Just like the years that spin without a sound I'm still that kid on daddy's shoulders reachin' for the stars Chasin' dreams as fast as numbers on the cars

Verse 3

Now I take my little girl on Sundays to the track She points at the fast ones, says daddy look at that I put her on my shoulders and the circle starts again And I hear my daddy's voice inside the engine's din

Bridge

Green flag, white flag, checkered at the end Life flies by lap after lap, my friend So hold on to the ones beside you in the stands The race is better with somebody holdin' hands Numbers on the cars, goin' round and round

The sound

Nostalgic upbeat country, 112 BPM, driving acoustic guitar, electric guitar with a bright energetic tone, drums with forward momentum and fills on transitions, bass propelling the song forward, fiddle adding excitement and emotion, male vocal with warmth and nostalgia, production that captures the thrill and emotion of race day, builds energy through the song
