That's A Mistake

The story

He knows the warning signs and leans in anyway.

She walks in like a warning sign, red lips and red flags, and he opens the door anyway. By Sunday morning the bottles are empty, the promises are empty, and her number still sits in his phone, waiting for another 3 a.m. drive to a house that ain’t home. He knows it’s wrong, but tonight he keeps making the same bad call.

Lyrics

Verse 1

She walked in like a warning sign I chose to ignore Red lips, red flags, I still held open the door She tasted like tequila and a little bit of sin I knew she'd be the kind of wreck I'd wreck myself again

Pre-Chorus

But my mama didn't raise a quitter Even when the poison's bitter So I leaned right in

Chorus

That's a mistake, that's a bad call at midnight That's a left turn when you know damn well it's a right That's her number still saved in my phone That's a three AM drive to a house that ain't home That's a shot I shouldn't take, that's a heart I'm gonna break Yeah, I know it but I'll make it anyway That's a mistake

Verse 2

She had a way of makin' Monday feel like Friday night Of turnin' every red light green with just a smile But come Sunday mornin', man, the damage had been done Empty bottles, empty promises, and nowhere left to run

Verse 3

Now I'm two towns over with her ghost in the rearview Still reachin' for my phone every time I've had a few Some lessons hit you harder when you knew before you fell But if lovin' her's a mistake, man, I made it pretty well

Bridge

Maybe one day I'll learn to leave well enough alone Maybe one day I won't drive past her road But tonight ain't that night, and I ain't that strong So I'll keep on makin' mistakes till the break of dawn

The sound

Mid-tempo country rock, 110 BPM, driving electric guitar riff with a slight Southern rock edge, punchy kick drum, acoustic guitar strumming underneath, steel guitar accents on the chorus, bass-heavy groove, raw male vocal with slight grit, subtle organ pad in the bridge, builds energy into each chorus with crashing cymbals
