The story

He quits the bottle and finally meets himself clear-eyed.

He used to close down bars from here to county line, with a tab at Rosie’s and a courthouse fine trailing behind him. Then he wakes to a stranger in the mirror, orders a Coke while his buddies stare, and a girl beside him smiles. Friday nights turn quiet, but he remembers them now—and the wide-awake life leaves him no place to hide.

Lyrics

Verse 1

I used to close down every bar from here to county line Had a tab at Rosie's that was longer than my fine Collection from the courthouse for the stupid things I've done But I woke up one mornin' and I couldn't find the sun

Pre-Chorus

I looked in the mirror at a stranger starin' back Decided right then I was tired of runnin' off the track

Chorus

I don't drink anymore, but I don't drink any less Nah, I'm kiddin', I put the bottle down and cleaned up all the mess I don't drink anymore, and the mornin's finally clear I can see the life I'm livin' instead of drownin' every fear Turns out the bottom of the glass ain't where the answers are I don't drink anymore, and I've never felt this far

Verse 2

My buddies thought I'd lost it when I ordered just a Coke The bartender dropped his jaw like it was some kind of a joke But the girl sittin' beside me smiled and said I like your style And for the first time in forever, man, I felt it was worthwhile

Verse 3

Now my Friday nights are different, not as loud but twice as full I remember every moment and the gravity don't pull Me under like it used to when the whiskey had the wheel I don't drink anymore, and I finally learned to feel

Bridge

I ain't preachin' to nobody, do your thing and raise your glass I just found that my forever wasn't living in the past Of a bottle that was empty like the promises I'd make I don't drink anymore, and I'm wide, wide awake

The sound

Clever, mid-tempo country at 104 BPM. Clean acoustic guitar with a witty, bouncy feel. Light electric guitar accents. Upbeat drums with a positive groove. Bass guitar with a spring in its step. Piano adding brightness. Slight honky-tonk feel but modern and fresh. Humorous in the setup, heartfelt in the delivery. The sound of a fresh start with a wink.
