The story

Heaven is a porch light and a name spoken soft.

Heaven looks like a creaking front porch, a dog by the door, biscuits rising in a Sunday kitchen, and kids running barefoot through the sprinkler. The singer knows church and scripture, but he keeps returning to the woman beside him, where golden light falls on her chair and ordinary grace feels like the only place he belongs.

Lyrics

Verse 1

If heaven's got a front porch I bet it looks like yours With a swing that creaks in the evenin' breeze and a dog beside the door If heaven's got a soundtrack I bet it sounds like your laugh Ringing out across the clover field on the one good dirt road path

Pre-Chorus

I been to church a thousand times, read the book from front to back But the closest thing to paradise is the way you love me back

Chorus

This must be heaven, or somethin' close to it The way the golden light falls down on every place you sit This must be heaven, I can feel it in my bones Right here beside you is the only heaven I've ever known If it ain't, then I don't need the real thing at all This must be heaven, and I don't wanna fall

Verse 2

Your mama's kitchen on a Sunday, biscuits on the rise Your daddy tellin' stories with the whole world in his eyes The kids are runnin' barefoot through the sprinkler in the yard And you look at me like I'm the answer to your prayer said in the dark

Chorus

This must be heaven, or somethin' close to it The way the golden light falls down on every place you sit This must be heaven, I can feel it in my bones Right here beside you is the only heaven I've ever known If it ain't, then I don't need the real thing at all This must be heaven, and I don't wanna fall

Verse 3

So let me stay right here forever in this ordinary grace Where love ain't complicated and I know my place I don't need the pearly gates if I got you beside me here This heaven on a back road's got me sheddin' grateful tears

Bridge

Maybe God don't make you wait 'til the end to see the light Maybe heaven's in the Tuesday dinner and the Thursday night Maybe it's the way she says my name when the day's been long Maybe heaven isn't somewhere else, maybe I've been here all along

The sound

Warm, glowing country ballad at 84 BPM. Acoustic guitar with a gentle, open strum. Pedal steel floating ethereally. Soft piano adding hymn-like quality. Light strings creating an angelic bed. Minimal percussion - soft kick and a whisper of hi-hat. Bass guitar barely there, more felt than heard. Heavenly, grateful, Sunday-morning-sunlight energy. Pure and reverent.
