Hard To Leave

The story

Love keeps him at the door, one night at a time.

He keeps packing his bag and never makes it past goodbye, because her eyes pull him back and his other foot stays planted in love. Friends call him crazy, but he knows the mess and the whisper that steadies him, so he hangs up his hat and stays one more night, even as staying starts to feel like forever.

Lyrics

Verse 1

Every time I pack my bag I end up stayin' one more night Every time I say goodbye your eyes convince me it ain't right I've had one foot out the door for goin' on a year But the other foot's in love with you and it won't move from here

Pre-Chorus

I know we're no good, I know we don't work But leavin' you feels worse than the hurt

Chorus

You're so hard to leave, like a song I can't stop singin' Hard to leave, even when the bells stop ringin' Every reason that I've got to go gets drowned out by the pull You're so hard to leave, and I'm such a fool

Verse 2

My friends all say I'm crazy, that I need to rip the band-aid off But they don't know the way you whisper when you think that I'm lost They don't see you at your best, they only see the mess And I know this ain't forever but I can't leave you yet

Chorus

You're so hard to leave, like a song I can't stop singin' Hard to leave, even when the bells stop ringin' Every reason that I've got to go gets drowned out by the pull You're so hard to leave, and I'm such a fool

Verse 3

Maybe that's the trick of love, it holds you just enough To make the leavin' feel like drowning and the stayin' feel like luck So I'll unpack my bag again and hang my hat up on the door And pretend that one more night won't turn to one forever more

Bridge

One day I'll find the strength, one day I'll walk away But you and I both know that one day isn't today So hold me like you mean it, even if we're wrong You're so hard to leave And I've been here too long But I'm stayin'

The sound

Slow-burning emotional country, 86 BPM, haunting acoustic guitar arpeggios, atmospheric electric guitar with delay, minimal drums building through the song, deep bass notes, pedal steel adding ache, subtle piano on the bridge, male vocal raw and conflicted, production that feels heavy with longing, builds slowly to an emotional peak on the final chorus
