The story

He keeps dressing the pain in a mask.

At the party, she arrives as an angel and moves through the room untouched, while he comes as a ghost and feels it fit too well. The fog machine, the sad pumpkin face, and the song that turns up between Monster Mash and their old one all press the same bruise: Halloween is what his life becomes after she leaves, and midnight only strips the costume from the ache.

Lyrics

Verse 1

You showed up to the party as an angel Which is ironic if you ask the boys you've burned I was dressed up as a ghost which was fitting Cause I've been invisible since the summer turned You walked right through me like the costume worked Grabbed a drink and disappeared And I stood there haunting the corner of the kitchen Wishing I was someone you'd come near

Pre-Chorus

Everybody's pretending to be something tonight But I've been wearing a mask since you said goodbye

Chorus

Halloween is every day since you left I've been playing a character catching my breath Trick or treating my way through this pain Putting on a brave face going out in the rain Halloween and the scariest part Isn't the dark it's a broken heart That keeps knocking on your door Hoping you'll treat me like you did before

Verse 2

The fog machine is doing what my brain does Clouding up the room so I can't see Somebody carved a pumpkin with a sad face And I felt personally attacked honestly The playlist went from Monster Mash to our song And I watched you mouth the words across the room You were dancing with that vampire in the corner And I was just a boy dressed as the gloom

Chorus

Halloween is every day since you left I've been playing a character catching my breath Trick or treating my way through this pain Putting on a brave face going out in the rain Halloween and the scariest part Isn't the dark it's a broken heart That keeps knocking on your door Hoping you'll treat me like you did before

Verse 3

When the clock hits midnight and the costumes come off I wonder if you'll see me standing here Not the ghost not the brave face not the punchline Just the guy who loved you for a year But the masks are glued on pretty tight tonight And maybe that's the trick of it all We dress up to escape what's underneath And call it fun and call it fall

Bridge

Take the costume off take the candy Take the haunted house and the cobweb strings The only thing that's truly scary Is love and all the ghosts it brings

The sound

Moody atmospheric country at 96 BPM. Dark electric guitar tones, minor key. Reverb-heavy production with eerie ambient textures. Driving drums on chorus with floor tom emphasis. Synth pads mixed with fiddle for an unusual haunting blend. Twenty One Pilots meets country. Creative, moody, October-night energy.
