The story

Night falls, and the mind turns hostile.

By day he keeps the smile in place, nods at neighbors, and plays the part. But when the sun drops below the tree line, the quiet gets loud, the TV becomes noise, and every shadow, every wall, every empty hour between midnight and morning closes in until he’s fighting to stay in the chair.

Lyrics

Verse 1

Daytime I'm a champion, got the smile down, got the act Nod and wave at neighbors, hold the door and don't look back But soon as the sun drops below the tree line in the west The demons start their shift and I'm a stranger to myself

Pre-Chorus

The clock hits nine and the quiet hits harder Every shadow's got a voice, every wall gets a little darker

Chorus

Hell at night, that's when the ghosts come home Hell at night, I'm never really alone The daylight keeps the monsters underneath the bed But hell at night puts every one of them inside my head

Verse 2

I turn the TV on for noise, not 'cause I care what's playing Anything to drown the sound of everything my mind keeps saying The ceiling stares back blankly, the phone won't ring this late And the distance between midnight and morning is a weight

Chorus

Hell at night, that's when the ghosts come home Hell at night, I'm never really alone The daylight keeps the monsters underneath the bed But hell at night puts every one of them inside my head

Verse 3

But I've been learning to sit still and let the darkness pass To breathe through the anxiety like it's a storm of glass The morning always comes, the light eventually breaks through And maybe hell at night is just the fight that makes me new

Bridge

I'm not afraid to say it's hard, I'm not ashamed to say I'm scared The bravest thing I've ever done is sitting in this chair Letting nighttime have its say without it having all of me Because hell at night is temporary, and the dawn will set me free

The sound

Dark, intense country at 80 BPM. Tremolo electric guitar, atmospheric reverb, deep bass, and a heartbeat-like kick drum. Eerie and cinematic verses with a bigger, cathartic chorus. Minor key with moments of major resolution in the bridge. Think night-terror Americana with hard-won hope.
