The story

He keeps measuring himself against the man he means to be.

He comes from a sawmill father with pine on his clothes and gravel in his hands, a man who teaches fences, silence, and the worth of doing. He stumbles through bars and bad texts, then resets with every sunrise, still reaching for the kind of life where he shows up early, keeps promises, and hopes the churchyard oak remembers his word.

Lyrics

Verse 1

My daddy worked the sawmill, came home smelling like pine Hands rough as gravel roads, but his heart was always kind He taught me how to fix a fence and when to hold my tongue Said the measure of a man ain't where he's been, it's what he's done

Pre-Chorus

I don't need the world to know my name Just wanna lay my head down without carrying any shame

Chorus

I wanna be a good man, steady as the ground The kind who shows up early, the kind who sticks around Not perfect, just honest, doing what I can At the end of all my days, I wanna be a good man

Verse 2

I've stumbled into bars when I should've been at home Sent the wrong text at midnight, let my temper set the tone But every morning's mercy, every sunrise is a chance To put my boots back on the ground and take another stance

Chorus

I wanna be a good man, steady as the ground The kind who shows up early, the kind who sticks around Not perfect, just honest, doing what I can At the end of all my days, I wanna be a good man

Verse 3

Someday when they lay me down beneath that churchyard oak I hope they say he loved too hard and never let it go He held the door for strangers, held his family even more He wasn't made of money but his word was worth its weight in gold

Bridge

I know I'll get it wrong, I know I'll fall apart But a good man ain't the one who's strong, he's the one who guards his heart So I'll keep trying harder, keep my promises in line Keep praying God will make me more of the man I see inside

The sound

Anthemic mid-tempo country rock at 96 BPM. Driving acoustic guitar strumming with electric guitar swells, solid kick-snare groove, and a bass line with conviction. Warm male vocal tone. Build from stripped-down verse to a full-band chorus with gang vocals. Think stadium-country with heart and grit.
