The story

He burns the map to outrun the life behind him.

Taillights smear red in a Walmart lot as he points the truck down the yellow line, phone silent, seat back, half-tank full. A diner waitress tops off his coffee and tells him the road will take care of him, and by sunrise he is past the county line, leaving every ghost in the rearview as the blacktop carries him toward a place that feels like his own.

Lyrics

Verse 1

Taillights bleeding red into the dark Left my whole world in a Walmart parking lot Windshield full of stars and a half-tank plan Nothing but the yellow line telling me where I am Phone on silent, seat pushed back Every mile I drive I ain't looking at the map

Pre-Chorus

Somewhere past the county line I stopped counting all the signs Turns out running feels a lot like finding

Chorus

Blacktop gone, gone, gone Burning rubber like a country song Leaving every ghost I've ever known In the rearview where they belong I don't know where I'm headed but I'm heading there strong Blacktop gone, gone, gone

Verse 2

Passed a diner where the coffee's always on Waitress smiled like she'd seen a hundred me's come along Running from the same old same old town Where the walls close in and the dreams shut down She topped me off and said, \Honey, drive it true\ Said, \The road don't care, but it'll take care of you\

Chorus

Blacktop gone, gone, gone Burning rubber like a country song Leaving every ghost I've ever known In the rearview where they belong I don't know where I'm headed but I'm heading there strong Blacktop gone, gone, gone

Verse 3

Sun's coming up on a state I've never seen Rolling hills and a sky so gold it's almost mean Pulled off at a field where the wildflowers grow Stood there breathing in what letting go feels like, though I ain't running anymore, I'm finally free The blacktop took me somewhere I could be me

Bridge

Every crack and every curve Every town I didn't deserve Led me right to where I'm standing now With my boots on solid ground And my heart not weighing me down

The sound

Mid-tempo country rock, 120 BPM. Driving electric guitar riff with a bluesy edge, steady kick drum and snare groove, acoustic guitar strumming underneath. Build from stripped-down verse to full-band chorus with soaring pedal steel. Bridge drops to acoustic only before the final swell. Think Keith Urban meets Chris Stapleton energy.
