The story

He stops apologizing for the shape they made him fill.

At family dinners and in every crooked photo, he is the one they point at, the one they call different like it is a diagnosis. He takes the van, the guitar, and the dream they call a bad plan, then finds his own road, his brother calling at midnight to ask what freedom feels like, while he leaves the empty chair and the Sunday sermons behind.

Lyrics

Verse 1

Every family photo I'm the one who's crooked Tilted hat or looking somewhere else Christmas dinner I'm the conversation When I'm not there to defend myself They say he's different like it's a diagnosis Like the way I live is some disease But I'd rather be the black sheep in the pasture Than white wool on my knees

Pre-Chorus

They prayed for me to change like I'm a weather pattern But storms don't ask permission to exist

Chorus

I'm the black sheep and I'm done apologizing Done shrinking into spaces I don't fit I'm the black sheep and the wool looks good on me Black goes with everything I guess So save your Sunday sermons for the choir Save your whispers for someone who cares I'm the black sheep of this family And I finally learned to wear it like a prayer

Verse 2

My brother got the scholarship the trophy wife The house three blocks from mom and dad I got a van a guitar and a dream That everyone said was the worst plan that I had But I've seen the sunrise in eleven states Played my songs for strangers who became friends And my brother calls me midnight sometimes Asking what freedom feels like in the end

Verse 3

To every kid who doesn't match the mold Who feels like something's wrong with how they're made The herd is overrated trust me The pasture's bigger when you're not afraid So be the odd one be the loud one Be the one they talk about at dinner Cause history remembers the black sheep Not the ones who followed like beginners

Bridge

Mama I know you worry and I love you But I can't be the son you drew up in your head I'm something better something realer I'm the son who chose himself instead

The sound

Defiant country-rock at 110 BPM. Overdriven electric guitar riffs, driving drums with aggressive fills. Acoustic guitar underneath for country grounding. Bass guitar locked in tight. Rebellious energy with vulnerability in the bridge. Brothers Osborne meets Margo Price. Bold, proud, anthemic.
