The story
She stops shrinking and starts living in her own skin.
She spends years twisting into someone else’s shape, smiling at parties, wearing the clothes he likes, and dimming her fire until she forgets she is the one writing the story. Then he leaves, the light cracks through, and she starts eating alone, singing too loud, painting her room yellow, learning the mirror was never empty.
Lyrics
Verse 1
Used to twist myself in knots to fit your frame Smiled at parties when I wanted to scream your name Wore the clothes you liked, laughed at jokes I didn't get Dimmed my fire so your shadow wouldn't sweat Lost myself in someone else's story Forgot that I was the author all along
Pre-Chorus
But something cracked the morning that you left And sunlight came pouring through the mess
Chorus
I'm getting better at being who I am Loud and messy and a little unplanned I eat alone and I like the quiet I sing too loud and I don't try to hide it Turns out the person I was looking for Was standing in the mirror all along I'm getting better at being who I am
Verse 2
Bought a plant, named it something dumb Started running just to feel my lungs Called my mama on a Tuesday night Said I'm sorry for the years I wasn't right Painted my room the color that I wanted Turns out it's been yellow all this time
Chorus
I'm getting better at being who I am Loud and messy and a little unplanned I eat alone and I like the quiet I sing too loud and I don't try to hide it Turns out the person I was looking for Was standing in the mirror all along I'm getting better at being who I am
Verse 3
Still got bad days, still got doubt Still got mornings where I can't get out But I'm learning that the cracks let the gold shine through And imperfect is a pretty shade on you I don't need to be somebody's everything I just need to be enough for me
Bridge
Every scar's a lesson, every tear's a song Every wrong turn taught me where I belong I'm not who I was and I'm not done yet But I'm closer to me than I've ever been And that's enough, yeah that's enough
The sound
Uplifting folk-country, 105 BPM. Bright acoustic guitar with a capo on the 4th fret, light tambourine, warm bass groove. Builds with handclaps and group harmonies in the chorus. Banjo enters in verse 2. Inspirational and warm. Think Brandi Carlile meets Cam's storytelling.
