The story
Kindness shows up in plain clothes.
On a dark highway outside Memphis town, the engine dies and a silent old man in a truck fixes the stranding driver, then disappears. Later, a nurse holds a mother’s hand through cancer and old hymns at three AM, while pennies, cardinals, and a wind from nowhere suggest the lost may still be near. The ache is that angels never announce themselves.
Lyrics
Verse 1
Lost my way on a highway Somewhere outside of Memphis town Engine died, phone was dead Not a single soul around Then a truck pulled up behind me Old man with a knowing grin Fixed me up without a word And drove off in the wind
Pre-Chorus
I never got his name But I felt something change
Chorus
Angels They walk among us every day In the faces of the faithful In the hands that choose to stay Angels You might not know them when they come But you'll feel it in your spirit Like a warmth inside the sun Angels are all around
Verse 2
My mama fought that cancer hard Five rounds and then some more The nurse who held her hand at night Was an angel, I am sure She didn't just give medicine She gave my mama hope Hummed old hymns at three AM When mama couldn't cope
Chorus
Angels They walk among us every day In the faces of the faithful In the hands that choose to stay Angels You might not know them when they come But you'll feel it in your spirit Like a warmth inside the sun Angels are all around
Verse 3
Sometimes I think the ones we've lost Still linger close and near A wind that comes from nowhere A whisper in your ear A penny on the sidewalk A cardinal in the tree Maybe heaven's not that far Maybe they're still watching me
Bridge
So keep your eyes open wide Keep your heart open too The next angel you meet Might be standing next to you Or maybe, just maybe You're the angel someone needs A hand, a word, a moment Sowing heaven's little seeds
The sound
Gentle, spiritual country at 72 BPM. Soft acoustic guitar arpeggios, warm piano, ethereal pedal steel. Minimal drums - just soft brushwork. Strings creating an angelic, floating quality. Reverb-rich production that feels spacious and sacred. Harmonies that sound like a small choir on the chorus. Think peaceful, comforting, transcendent.
