Song For My Son

The story

A father builds a ladder out of love.

He holds a child barely here and makes a vow in that room: he will kneel low, stay steady, and build the ladder the boy climbs. He names the bruises, the first love, the hard lessons, and the day the boy stands with his own sacred vow, while the only thing he can promise is the familiar sound of home.

Lyrics

Verse 1

I held you first when you were barely here So small my hand could cover you from ear to ear And I made a promise standin' in that room That I would be the man you'd never have to look up to I'd kneel down to your level every time And build the ladder you could climb

Pre-Chorus

The world's gonna test you, son It's gonna push and pull and try to make you run But I'll be right here, steady as the ground Every time you need to hear a familiar sound

Chorus

This is a song for my son For the man you haven't yet become For the scraped knees and the broken things For the first love and the hurt it brings This is a song for my boy For every tear and every joy May you always know that come what may Your daddy loves you more than words can say

Verse 2

I'll teach you how to throw and how to catch How to lose a game and keep your head attached How to treat a woman like she's made of gold How to tell the truth even when the truth is cold I'll show you that a real man cries That strength ain't in the fist but in the eyes

Chorus

This is a song for my son For the man you haven't yet become For the scraped knees and the broken things For the first love and the hurt it brings This is a song for my boy For every tear and every joy May you always know that come what may Your daddy loves you more than words can say

Verse 3

One day you'll stand where I'm standin' now Holdin' your own with that same sacred vow And you'll understand the weight and the gift Of a love so big it creates a shift In everything you thought you knew about life Son, you are my purpose, you are my light

Bridge

When the world gets loud And you feel alone Remember this song And find your way home I won't always have the answers I won't always get it right But I'll always be your father And I'll always hold you tight This is my song for you, son The greatest one I'll ever write Not for the radio or the stage But for you, on every page of your life

The sound

Intimate, profound ballad at 72 BPM. Solo acoustic guitar with a gentle, fatherly feel. Piano adds depth and tenderness. Cello provides low, emotional resonance. No drums until the bridge where a very gentle pattern supports the build. Vocal should sound like a man singing to his sleeping child. Think Dierks Bentley 'Living' or Rodney Atkins sentimentality.
