The story

Healing keeps getting interrupted.

He has almost shaken her off when he sees her at a stoplight, riding passenger side in somebody else’s truck, and the progress falls apart. He deletes, disappears, goes to the gym, even makes it to a dream in a blue dress, but every glimpse sends him back to square one, still driving forward through the same old ache.

Lyrics

Verse 1

I was almost free, had your ghost on the run Hadn't cried in my car since the end of last month Then I saw you at the stoplight, passenger side of somebody's truck And just like that the healing came undone, just my luck

Pre-Chorus

How many times can one heart break in the same damn place How many times do I gotta get over your face

Chorus

Here I go, gettin' over you again Back to square one, back to where the hurtin' begins I was almost good, I was almost through But here I go, gettin' over you again Like a wound that opens every time it starts to mend Here I go, over you again

Verse 2

I unfollowed you in January, felt like cuttin' off a limb Started goin' to the gym and filled the silence to the brim But you showed up in my dreams last Tuesday wearin' that blue dress And I woke up missin' you like I ain't made a bit of progress

Chorus

Here I go, gettin' over you again Back to square one, back to where the hurtin' begins I was almost good, I was almost through But here I go, gettin' over you again Like a wound that opens every time it starts to mend Here I go, over you again

Verse 3

Maybe gettin' over you ain't somethin' that you finish clean Maybe it's a road with potholes and a busted-up machine But I'll keep on drivin' forward even when the road loops back 'Cause one day over you will be the final fact

Bridge

They say time heals everything but they don't say how long They don't say you'll hear a voice and forget that you've been strong So I'll keep on healin' crooked, keep on bendin' but not broke Getting' over you again is the hardest song I've wrote

The sound

Mid-tempo country with a modern edge at 98 BPM. Acoustic guitar with slight chorus effect. Electric guitar adding emotional swells on the chorus. Programmed hi-hat with a real snare crack. Bass guitar with a melancholy groove. Pedal steel doing call-and-response with the vocal. Layered production that builds. Relatable, frustrated, emotionally honest. The sound of one step forward, two steps back.
