The story
He trades escape for the place that already holds him.
He boards at the edge of a clean escape, ticket in hand, then stops at the gate and sees the truth: the coast, the city, the fresh start can’t outrun red dirt, porch swings, two-step nights, and the sky that knows his face. His friends send distant pictures, but he answers with sunsets from his truck, choosing Texas again as if it chose him first.
Lyrics
Verse 1
I had a ticket to the coast, one-way flight at dawn A fresh start in a city where nobody knows my song Big dreams packed in a carry-on, goodbye on my lips But I stopped at the gate and I couldn't make the trip Cause somewhere between security and boarding zone A I realized everything I'm runnin' to is already where I stay
Pre-Chorus
They got oceans out there, mountains touching clouds But ain't none of it as deep as what this red dirt's all about
Chorus
I keep choosin' Texas every time I get the chance Choosin' two-step over any other dance Choosin' sunsets on the open range over city lights Choosin' Friday nights and porch swings over fancy flights I keep choosin' Texas like it chose me first For better or for worse, through the drought and through the thirst I could go anywhere the wind decides to blow But I keep choosin' Texas cause it's all I need to know
Verse 2
My college friends are scattered coast to coast They send me pictures from the places they love most And I just send 'em back a sunset from my truck With a caption sayin' sorry but I'm just too stuck On these wide-open spaces and the people who stay real On the barbecue and bluebonnets and the way this place can heal
Chorus
I keep choosin' Texas every time I get the chance Choosin' two-step over any other dance Choosin' sunsets on the open range over city lights Choosin' Friday nights and porch swings over fancy flights I keep choosin' Texas like it chose me first For better or for worse, through the drought and through the thirst I could go anywhere the wind decides to blow But I keep choosin' Texas cause it's all I need to know
Verse 3
Someday I'll travel, see what's out beyond the plains But I know every runway leads me back here just the same Cause Texas ain't just where I'm from, it's who I am It's stitched into my marrow and it's written in my hands
Bridge
So call me stubborn, call me rooted, call me small-town blind But I found what others search the world for right here all the time A place that knows my name, a sky that knows my face I keep choosin' Texas, there ain't no other place
The sound
Proud Texas country anthem, 110 BPM, big acoustic guitar strumming, telecaster with Texas twang, fiddle and steel guitar weaving together, solid bass foundation, confident drums with a heartland feel. Patriotic for a state of mind. Think sunset over the Hill Country with your people around you.
