The story
A basement circle turns survival into a new beginning.
In a church basement, under folding chairs and bad coffee, he says the words out loud for the first time and nobody reaches to fix him. Ray calls at 3AM, drives through the rain, and the room of strangers becomes the place that gives back mornings, Tuesdays, and a reason to stay when the next drink still waits.
Lyrics
Verse 1
Folding chairs in a church basement Bad coffee in a styrofoam cup A circle full of strangers who are braver Than anyone who's never had to give it up My name is and I'm an and I said it Out loud for the very first time And the room didn't judge me didn't fix me Just nodded like they recognized the crime
Pre-Chorus
Twelve steps sounds like nothing when you're standing But it's Everest when you've been on the floor
Chorus
AA saved my life I'll say it In a bar in a church in a song on the stage AA gave me back my mornings Gave me Tuesdays without rage I know it ain't for everyone But it was everything for me A room of broken people Who decided to be free
Verse 2
My sponsor's name is Ray he's sixty-seven Got a tattoo of a date upon his wrist Twenty years clean and he still shows up Says the day you stop is the day you're most at risk He called me at 3AM when I was shaking Drove forty minutes in the rain Said I know you want to drink son But I promise you the morning's worth the pain
Chorus
AA saved my life I'll say it In a bar in a church in a song on the stage AA gave me back my mornings Gave me Tuesdays without rage I know it ain't for everyone But it was everything for me A room of broken people Who decided to be free
Verse 3
Now I'm the one who shows up for the new ones Sitting scared in that same metal chair I hand them coffee say I've been where you are And the hardest part is showing up I swear Some days are mountains some are just small hills But every sober sunrise is a win And if I ever think I've got it figured out I go back to that basement and begin
Bridge
One day at a time is not a cliche When one day is all you've got the strength to hold So here's to every person in that circle The bravest people that I've ever known
The sound
